“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” — John 14:6
For me, this verse is the single most transformative verse in the Bible. This verse has built my faith, transformed my mind, and it continues to do those things to this day. When you unpack all that is being said in this statement by Jesus, you realize that only the Son of God could speak this way. Scarcely can we put into words the amazing realities spoken of in this text. No man ever spoke like Jesus. No man has since. There is none like Him.
The first sermon I ever preached in New Home Baptist Church was from this text. It was a text that gripped me for weeks. I would meditate on it, and look at it from every angle. I listened to others speak about it, until finally I sat down and wrote it. In reality, that sermon is what God used to springboard me into the pastorate.
I want to unpack what Jesus is saying here, because if what He is saying is true, our lives will never be the same, and we should spend the rest of our time on earth conforming ourselves to Him.
He says He is ‘the Way’
What is profound in all of these statements, is that Jesus uses the word ‘the’ to make Himself exclusive. In other words He is saying, He is the only way. He is not a way, or one of many ways, He is the only way. He is the only way to be reconciled to God. He is the only way to have your sins forgiven. He is the only way for you to have peace with God. Because He is the only one who shed sinless blood, and made payment for sins. He is the propitiation, and only He rose from the grave, vindicating all that He said. God remained just, and justifies those who have faith in Jesus. There is no other payment made, therefore there is no other way. He is the only way to God.
He says He is, ‘the Truth.’
We live in a post-modern world. A world-view that says truth is relative. That truth is subjective. The Oprah Winfrey’s of the world are huge advocates of this view, and sadly it has crept into our churches. If it’s true for you, it’s true. You will hear people say things like this, “Live your truth.” Which doesn’t make sense because if people have contrary views of what is true, someone has to be wrong. Not everyone can be right.
Amazingly, Jesus in this statement condemns the idea of relative truth. He says He is, the truth. Not a truth, not one of many truths, the Truth. Meaning, all truth stems from Him. He is the source of all truth, the definer all things. The world was made through Him, for Him, and by Him, therefore, this world is His. The only world-view that is true is one that submits to Him. You cannot have any right knowledge, if you are wrong about the author of it. All truth comes from Him, and every mind that tries to attain truth apart from Him ends up believing a lie.
He says He is, ‘the Life’
We are breathing at this moment. We are all alive in a sense, but this statement goes beyond that. Jesus is exclusively, ‘the Life.’ Meaning, He is the only way to be born again. The only way to be indwelled by the Spirit, the only way to be satisfied in your soul, the only way to truly be happy in this life. This is beyond physical breath, this is true life, a never-ending well of satisfaction, and joy. He who drinks from Him, will never be thirsty again. He is the end of all searching in this life. He is what life is about, and even beyond that, He is life.
He says, ‘No one comes to the Father except through me’
He puts an amazing exclamation on His statement here. He is the only Way, the only Truth, the only Life. And if that weren’t enough He is the only way to have a genuine relationship with God. Buddha cannot save you, Ghandi cannot save you, Mohammed cannot save you, and you cannot save you. All those men died, and remained dead. But the one who is Sovereign over all life rose from the dead. He is alive now, and we have eyewitness testimony of this. This exclusivity is what causes hatred from the unregenerate. This fact, that you do not get to decide what is true, and false. God has decided, God has defined, and God is Jesus.
Claims such as these should make us all ponder what C.S. Lewis pondered in the ‘Trilemma’. Jesus was either a liar, lunatic, or Lord. If we truly exercise logic, those are our only three options.
If He were a liar, He wouldn’t have gone all the way to death behind His ruse. Don’t you think as they began to drive nails through His hands, he would’ve recanted? Liars don’t die for their lies. So, we can conclude He believed what He was saying.
If He were a lunatic do you think His words would have been preserved the way that they have? He has confounded the wisest of men with His words for centuries. He said, ‘Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.’ And here we are in 2020 unpacking His words. Lunatics do not bear fruit in such a way.
Which leads us to conclude, Jesus is Lord.
