“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.” -Psalm 19:1
The entire universe testifies to the existence of God, and the glory of God. Astronomers cannot know exactly how many stars are in the universe, but they have guessed that there are 2,000,000,000,000 (two trillion) galaxies, with 100,000,000 (one hundred million) stars per galaxy. Those numbers are breathtaking. Even more breathtaking is that these stars exist by God’s breath-giving:
“By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host.” -Psalm 33:6
The biggest known star in the universe is UY Scuti. This star is said to have a radius 1,700 times larger than our sun. That would make our sun a mere dot in comparison to UY Scuti. And God breathed this star out of His mouth effortlessly.
Anytime I think I know better than God, I look at the stars. Anytime I feel like I need to inform God of an outcome that needs to happen in my life, I sit in the backyard and look at the stars. The stars in the universe should humble us, and cause us to worship Him. If we would slow down long enough to gaze into the heavens, we would find what we were designed for namely, the glory of God.
Every known thing in the universe, including us, is completely dependent on Him. Right now, as we breathe, our breath is in His hand. Every creature in the universe is dependent on God to eat today. Every rotation of the moon is by the word of His power. Our earth spins perfectly by His command. All is dependent on Him, and He is dependent on no one.
“He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power” -Hebrews 1:3
All of creation, the entire universe, is all about Him. It was created by Him, and for His glory. It is all a shadow of His greatness. May we all see the creation as a window to the glorious Creator, and Upholder of the universe. That’s why I say along with Jonathan Edwards:
“Nature is God’s greatest evangelist.”
