“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” -Matthew 5:11-12
Since the outlawing of abortion in New Home, there has been a major uptick in the uttering of evil against my wife and I. We have experienced a small fraction of what people like Mark Lee Dickson go through. Here are a few things that have been said,
“I’ll scoop my abortion out of the toilet and mail it to you.”
“I’ll dedicate my next abortion to you.”
“Cool, I’ll drop my next abortion at your single Mcdonald’s since you want it so bad.”
“So you’re saying that embryos are able to leave a woman’s body and seek refuge in New Home, Tx? Do y’all provide travel funds for the woman to remove the embryo and send it to New Home?”
“Good thing satanism protects fully living, viable humans instead of a clump of cells. You can legally get an abortion as a satanist. Hail Satan!”
These are just the quotes without curse words. There are plenty calling my wife names, saying horrible things about her pregnancy, and saying far more vulgar things. You get the point.
Here’s the thing, I would be more afraid if people such as this had nothing to say. I would be horrified if people such as this had good things to say. This is a good versus evil issue. Darkness is supposed to hate that which represents the light. It brings to mind these words from our Lord Jesus,
“For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.”
Darkness should always react in hatred to light. Evil will always hate what is good. And the first response to the truth, is always hatred.
Is it hard to read those things, and not retaliate? Absolutely. But I find refuge in the text I shared earlier that commands us to,
“Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”
The word ‘for’ in this text is vitally important to understand. It means because.
“Rejoice and be glad for (or because) your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”
Think of the prophets who were martyred. Isaiah was sawed in half. Paul was beheaded. Matthew was burnt at the stake. When you walk the path of persecution, you are walking a road well traveled, by the godliest of travelers.
I want to write an open letter, to all who have opposed the passing of this ordinance. To all those who have said unimaginable things. I want to make some things clear, and the best way to do that, I believe, was to write this out. So, here it is,
I want to begin by saying, I love you. I was once an enemy of God, and He loved me first. He changed my heart. He made me new. I desire this same change for you.
I want you to know that I am not afraid of you. I do not fear those who can only kill the body. I fear the one who created all bodies, and can throw both soul and body into hell. The worst thing you can do to me is end this temporal life, and in so doing, you usher me into eternal life. The man you are threatening, believes he is going to heaven.
I want you to know that I will not be silent. There is nothing you could say to me, that would shut me up. There are little lives at stake, and I’m willing to burn at this stake. Fighting for the lives of unborn children is a hill all pastors should be willing to die on. And this pastor is willing to die on it.
I am committing myself to something that you may not understand now. I am committing to going through the things you have sent, the horrific comments, and praying for you specifically. I will set what you’ve said before my eyes each day, and intercede for each of you. I will carve out time each day, in hopes that the Lord will carve the wickedness from your unregenerate heart. I will be praying that the understanding of your heart is enlightened. I will be praying that the Lord gives you a new heart, new eyes, and a new life. I am praying that you repent of this wickedness, and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the only name under heaven by which anyone can be saved. He is the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Him. I am committing myself to praying for you, because I truly do love you.
You are wrong, yet I will plead for you. You are evil, yet I will call out on your behalf. You will slap my cheek, and I will turn to you the other. But I will not be silent.
Your loving enemy, L.J. Wright
