Christians And Free Speech

“The three witnesses we have before this committee today collectively pose, I believe, the single greatest threat to free speech in America.” -Ted Cruz

With political censorship reaching a level that we have never seen in our country, Christians should be on notice. When Big Tech companies like Google, Facebook, and Twitter have the ability to dictate what we see and hear, they have reached a level of power that is almost uncontrollable. If anyone disagrees with the views of Jack Dorsey (CEO of Twitter), or Mark Zuckerberg (CEO of Facebook) they have the ability to censor those views under “policies” that change from moment to moment. Conservative views are silenced as hate speech, liberal views are gleefully embraced as love and tolerance.

If you think Christians shouldn’t be concerned about these issues, then you must not know the story of Pastor Wang Yi. Pastor Wang Yi, the pastor of Early Rain Covenant Church in China, has been arrested and sentenced to 9 years in prison. His crime? Preaching.

Pastor Wang Yi’s congregants posted on Facebook about his imprisonment and said,

“Pastor Wang Yi was just sentenced to 9 years in prison for proclaiming the gospel. May the Lord use Pastor Wang Yi’s imprisonment to draw many to Himself, and bring glory to His name.

Pastor Wang Yi was outspoken against the Chinese government, proclaiming the evil of forced abortions, and other major issues. What was the Chinese government’s response to Mr. Wang Yi’s speech? Censorship.

China’s leader Xi Jinping is an atheistic dictator, who has cracked down on Christianity in his country. He has raided churches, replaced pictures of Christ with pictures of himself, and even replaced the Ten Commandments with his own personal quotes. Regardless of what Joe Biden says, China is not our friend.

Why should Christians be aware of the crackdown on free speech? Because the gospel of Jesus Christ needs words spoken to advance.

“How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?” -Romans 10:14

When persecution is on the horizon, one of the first signs is an attack on speech. The Apostles experienced this in the first century,

“But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.” So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.” -Acts 4:17-18

As Christianity, and the name of Christ began to spread, the solution the Pharisee’s had was censorship. They warned them not to speak. They attacked their God-given right to free-speech, and this is the exact same thing we are seeing today. Tweets removed, accounts deactivated, and warnings given.

Christians cannot be silenced, and if anything these giant corporations will work right into God’s perfect plan to advance the gospel. So, do not fear, and do speak up.

There is one statement that got the early church in trouble, and will get us in trouble today. And Facebook can fact-check this statement all day, every day,

Jesus is Lord.
